Sometimes I miss my home. As you probably already know, I am not actually Korean. However, I grew up in Seoul. This crazy, amazing city is the place I became myself…so sometimes I miss my home. Although I don’t get to visit much, I try and reconnect by eating plenty of Korean food and now thanks to the internet…I can watch Korean dramas. Korean dramas are very popular throughout Asia and have spread to Europe and America so you should probably be watching them too 🙂
My Korean has diminished over the years so I still need the subtitles but I often know enough to look away for a bit or realize when the translation hasn’t quite captured the meaning. I love the little nuanced parts of Korean culture. I love to see places I have been, hearing the words that are so familiar and seeing all the places I never got to go (chejudo/제주도!!)
This is a list for my own memory and fun…
TV ROMANTIC DRAMA SERIES
Secret Garden 시크릿 가든
The first drama I watched. It is pretty much considered a classic and probably a great place to start for anyone wanting to jump in. This one I really enjoyed because of the mysticism and the story. It is very sweet and a little strange.
Boys over Flowers 꽃보다 남자
Oh my…Boys Over Flowers…This is the drama that made the first, giant splash everywhere. It is the quintessential Korean drama. And it has 이민호 (E Min Ho)…oh 이민호…sigh 이민호. I am way to old to be obsessed with anything or anyone (I had a small LOTR and Harry Potter problem) but I can’t help it. He may not be the best looking person and he has the WORST hair in this series but there is just something about him. I don’t even always like his characters but he is just charming with a little swagger. Ku Hye Sun (구혜선) was darling in this series. The last few episodes take a weird turn and I was just a little “done” with these twists so I gave it 4.5 stars but there is something about this series. It is hard not to watch it in an all consuming marathon…
The Heirs 상속자들(왕관을 쓰려는 자, 그 무게를 견뎌라 – 상속자들)
Oh my 이민호…My motivation to watch this was, of course, Mr. E Min Ho. It was a great series. Predictable…following the pattern of many Korean dramas but fun and sweet. 이민호’s hair was better in this one 🙂
Personal Taste 개인의 취향
Another drama featuring 이민호. So, I of course watched it as soon as I could. I didn’t love this one. It was cute and fun. I like E Min Ho’s character in this drama. Both E Min Ho and Son Ye-jin (손예진) were good in this series but…I don’t know?
Coffee Prince 커피프린스
I really tried to like this series. I just couldn’t…the storyline was too forced. I realize a common plot in Korean drama’s is to have misunderstandings and people who appear different than they are but…it was too much for me this time. It was still fun and cute but not as good as most for me…
You Are Beautiful 미남이시네요
After making my way through all of E Min Ho’s drama’s, I watched a few that weren’t quite “obsession worthy.” Then came this series. I really liked it. The story wasn’t forced and it was fun.
Goddess of Marriage 결혼의 여신
Really…this one of those series that I almost don’t know what to think. In some ways it is really good. An interesting glimpse into a lot of aspects of Korean culture that I don’t think American’s really understand. Although this is, of course, over dramatized, these are culture standards that are still active and often prevalent in Korea. It is a little distressing to see…
In Need of Romance 로맨스가 필요해
Definitely a TV-14 (possibly higher). I really didn’t love this series and yet part of me did like it. I didn’t like the actress who played the main character. She bothered me…
TV ACTION DRAMA SERIES
